Putignano a history you don't expect
Chapel of the Refuge
An internal connection leads from the Chapel of the Nativity to the Chapel of the Refuge, located on the right of the Presbytery, from which it is separated by a window.
A baroque statue, in polychrome stone, depicting the Virgin "Refugium peccatorum" with the Child, placed in the niche on the altar, gives its name. The statue is by an unknown artist, it has fine workmanship in some details such as the very fine pleats of the robe and the instinctive movement of the right arm bent to support the braid of the hair.
Inside it you can also admire a wooden Crucifix, at natural height, sculpted in 1767 by Francesco Antonini, transferred here from the Church of S. Antonio. The Christ shows himself with his powerful anatomical structure, which, even if treated in detail, as well as the rendering of the folds of the loincloth knotted with a rich bow on the side, remains weighted and heavy, not even animating the slight twist of the bust.
